At their best, Christians have immersed themselves in the teachings of the Bible. They have said with Job, “I have not departed from the commandment of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my portion of food.” (Job 23:12).

The Israelites learned to treasure God’s word during their time in the wilderness. They experienced hunger and were provided with manna to learn that “man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.” (Deut. 8:3). Jesus himself quoted these words when facing temptation (Matt. 4:4). To be at our best, we also need to be nourished daily by the word of God.

This is a plan to encourage that end.

STRUCTURE

The plan contains two tracks. One will take you through both the Old and New Testaments in one year, and the other will take you through just the New Testament. The plan has six ‘reading days’ a week. Fit it into your day as works best for you and enjoy the comfort of one day a week to ‘catch-up’ if you fall behind.

You can pick up a physical copy of the booklet at the Welcome table at one of our Sunday services.

Other Resources

  • Our church’s preferred translation is the English Standard Version (ESV). We recommend using a physical Bible rather than reading from your digital device. If you don’t own a Bible, you are welcome to take a copy from one of our Sunday services. If you’d like to buy a Bible to enrich your reading this year, the ESV Study Bible is an excellent choice and provides brief explanatory comments on key verses.

  • The Bible Project has a series of videos explaining the message each book of the Bible. Watching these before starting a book can be helpful as they explore overarching themes and narratives which can get lost when reading in smaller chunks.

  • Scripture is best read in community. As you follow this plan, we encourage you to do so together. Why not consider forming a group with those around you and meeting regularly to encourage one another and discuss your reflections on the reading?
